Alibaug has long served as a coastal escape from the concrete messiness of Mumbai’s dense urban sprawl. With new infrastructure such as the Ro-Ro, yacht services, the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, and the proposed Vasai-Alibaug corridor, the district is now more accessible than ever to all economic classes—from luxury second-home seekers to day trippers. In response, real estate developers are aggressively marketing and constructing multi-storeyed towers, often at odds with the region's scale, identity, and infrastructure limits. This rampant growth threatens the very charm that makes Alibaug attractive: its quiet coastal character, traditional settlements, and natural landscape. Without a clear urban design vision, the district risks becoming a fragmented satellite of Mumbai rather than a culturally-rooted destination.
The proposal aims to create awareness among state and local authorities regarding the irreversible consequences of rampant development, especially in light of climate change. It can serve as a base document to invite multi-disciplinary professionals for preparing a detailed and implementable urban design and infrastructure strategy—Tourism and Infrastructure Plan for Alibaug 2035.
